Photographer Steve Shapiro, who photographed David Bowie, Robert De Niro and Marlon Brando, has died

American photographer Steve Shapiro has died. This was reported on his Facebook page.

The man passed away at the age of 87.

“Steve passed away last night in a state of rest and wonder,” the post reads.

Shapiro learned his craft from the influential World War II photographer William Eugene Smith. Since 1961 he began to work as a freelance photographer. His work has appeared in magazines such as Life, Vanity Fair, Newsweek, Time, Sports Illustrated and Paris Match.

In the 1960s he took political photographs. So, Shapiro filmed highlights of the civil rights movement and accompanied Robert Francis Kennedy during his presidential campaign.

During the late 1960s and 1970s, he photographed mostly on film sets. He filmed backstages for The Godfather, Chinatown, Taxi Driver and Midnight Cowboy. He captured David Bowie, Robert De Niro, Marlon Brando and other movie and music stars.

Earlier it became known about the death of star photographer and director of David Bowie music videos Mick Rock.
