“I learned by imitating Western rappers. The youth of today have a different way.”

One of the main Russian-language series of the past year is "Soldout", in the center of which is the story of a young rapper standing at a crossroads. The producer of the project was a member of the "Casta" Khamil (Andrey Pasechny). In an interview, the musician explained how "Soldout" differs from previous domestic films about hip-hop, told which of the young artists he listens to, and also spoke about the persecution of Morgenstern. — How did it happen that you were among the producers of the series?

- Our group already had connections with the cinema - not so long ago the film "Piter by Kasta" was released. In that film, we were directly involved as actors, but we did not interfere with the soundtrack. “Soldout” was my first production experience. I got into the series through my close friend - Vanya Moskvin. We met with him, he told me about the project, I became very interested, because on the periphery of cinema there are always curious experiments - and unexpected results are obtained. In general, I happily took up producing. It seems that it turned out to quickly join - and good material came out.

- What were your functions?

- Initially, the task was to write a song for the main character of the series - Drumma'K had to perform a joint track with his producer. According to the plot, this is his first hit appearance on the stage, I wrote a song for this scene. But later I was also offered to become the sound producer of the entire series - to work with the soundtrack, choose background compositions, set the mood for the actors.

- Are you satisfied with the final result?

- Very satisfied. I have long been waiting for the appearance of a good domestic project about musicians and specifically about rap - with all the ensuing problems, with a dramatic note. It seems to me that the series has found its audience - the younger generation, which is now in constant search, because there are many opportunities, all paths are open. In my opinion, "Soldout" very well reflects this state, the state of a creative person.

- How is "Soldout" different from previous Russian films and TV shows about rap?

- There is communication, as close as possible to the living. The previous attempts were smoothed and combed - they did not immerse in reality.

- One of the main themes of the series is the conflict between the artist and the producer. But now, there is a feeling that most rap artists do not need producers - they make their own way through streaming. What do you think?

- Producers are needed at least at the first stages of formation. Of course, someone can break through on their own. But these are units, great luck. And such artists quickly disappear. I think producing is still very useful for musicians.

- The main role in the project was played by Gleb Kalyuzhny, who, in addition to acting, is engaged in rap - last year he even released a full-length album. Are you familiar with his work?

Haven't listened to his songs yet, but I'm going to. During the filming, we talked with him, and I got the impression that he has all the data for rap, Gleb is a.jpgted person. Moreover, at the Moscow premiere, Kalyuzhny read from the stage, and I watched how he behaves as a musical artist. In my opinion, Gleb then looked quite like a “combat unit”.

- Is it possible to combine the career of an actor and a musician?

- Of course, it is difficult, because you need to invest as much time in music as in acting. But it's still possible. The main thing is to write every day, at least a little. It really works, I speak from experience. In general, if an actor can allocate 1.5 hours a day between filming, then he can succeed.

- In "Soldout" there is also the hero of Alexei Shevchenkov, an experienced rock musician. Which of the central characters of the series is closer and more understandable to you now - the hero of Kalyuzhny, a young rapper, or an adult, accomplished rocker Shevchenkova?

- By mood, age - a rock musician (laughs). I understand his certain sluggishness, calmness. And, of course, I will note the game of Shevchenkov, he is an excellent actor.

Which young artist do you listen to? And how do you feel about the new school?

“I really like what young artists are doing. This is very cool, very bold, somewhere scandalous and protesting, interesting in terms of technique, different chips. Of the young ones, I like Mnogoznaal, Obladaet, Tveth. I follow them directly - they have a good wordplay, patterned rhymes.

Casta has always been valued for its deep lyrics. The current young stars are focusing on great sound, and the meaning is relegated to the background. Does it upset you?- Indeed, there is such a trend. However, even among young artists there are those who try to maintain a certain theme in the texts. As for seemingly completely thoughtless compositions, I would draw a parallel with poetry: there is classical, and there is, for example, Japanese tanka, they are just different. In my opinion, one should not always chase chewed meaning. After all, it often happens that you find the meaning only when you listen to the piece in its entirety. Only then do you realize that it is scattered around the track in small strokes, eventually gathering into a complete picture. It's great too.

The younger generation is looking, trying, experimenting, shooting in all directions - the search process. I myself studied, directly adopting the manner of Western colleagues. I tried to imitate them and in this imitation to look for my own style. And the young have a different way: they do not imitate, but try to expressively try all the most untried. This is an interesting approach.

- Many modern rappers in their texts openly speak not only about drugs, this happened before, but also about suicidal thoughts. In your opinion, is this acceptable, given that musicians broadcast to a wide audience?

- I always believed that music cannot push a person to such actions. Because music is the pulsating canvas of the artist himself, what he is. I myself used to listen to a lot of such songs in my time - in fact, since childhood. And such themes just gave charm to the aesthetic absorption of music. But it never went any further. I don't think music can harm a person. If there is a grain of destruction in a person, music, films, painting are not to blame for this.

- How do you feel about the situation with Morgenstern, who even had to leave the country amid accusations of promoting drugs, justifying Nazism and lawsuits?

“I don't know how to feel about it. To be honest, at first I thought it was another "duck", hype. But then I look - it dragged on a helluva lot ... I like Morgenstern as an artist. Perhaps here he got into some kind of story, didn’t share it with someone, didn’t add it. It is possible that this is blackmail. All in all, not a good story.

- At the end of last year, Oksimiron released a lot of new material. And the track “Who killed Mark?” shot the loudest of all, where he talks in detail about the beating by Roma Zhigan, which was preceded by disses against the attacker. At one time, Oksimiron read harshly about the "Caste" ... Have you forgiven him?

- We met, dotted the i's, talked. This is the most important thing: we heard him, he heard us. And they parted, never returning to this topic. As for Who Killed Mark?, I can only justify it as a promotion for his new album. Although, perhaps, he really has such a severe injury that he needed to speak out.

And the actions of Roma Zhigan themselves are, of course, utter nonsense, not a single healthy person will do this. Such things should not be present in real life, especially for show to everyone. It's creepy.

- A big concert is planned at the Caste in March. What else can fans expect from the band this year?

— Yes, yes, we are working on the concert right now. And in terms of writing, they took a short creative break - you need to collect your thoughts. In 2020, we released the album "Octopus Ink", in 2021 we released the children's release "Albomba". At the moment we are in search of a new mood for fresh material, but we will soon be connected.

- In a recent interview, Vladi said that he was afraid to release political songs, given what is happening in the country. Do you agree with him?

- As for me, so much has already been said, if not all. It is in creativity. In particular, in the last albums, we spoke about it quite tightly. But, probably, there are still some facets that can be covered, there will be more topics. We may do it in a different mood, but most likely we will.

What three albums have struck you lately?

- Of the last album, I really liked the BRUTTO album, unexpectedly pleased. Liked the Legalize album. And recently Soda Luv really surprised me...

- Perhaps in the future you will make a fit with him?

– I don’t know, I’m not sure about the fit (laughs). While I'm watching from the side, it's interesting.
