Russia - Bremen Museum returns skulls to Hawaii

Russia (bbabo.net), - The Museum of Overseas Countries in Bremen has parted with a part of the ethnographic collection - eight skulls, taken more than a century ago by German travelers from Hawaii. The exhibits were handed over to the delegation of the American state "in atonement for Germany's colonial past".

According to Bild, the ceremony of "returning the bones of the ancestors" was accompanied by religious rituals of the islanders. Three representatives of the Office of Hawaiian Affairs in national dress read prayers over a container with skulls - it was covered with a black cloth with a garland of fresh flowers. Those present were also sprinkled with water - as a sign of purification of the remains, which will be interred in the homeland. And the mayor of Bremen, Andreas Bovenshulte, delivered a speech in which he repented for the colonial policy of the Germans.

In total, the Hawaiian delegation is going to visit five museums in Germany and Austria and take 58 skulls with them. In Hawaii, they believe that their burial "will help the spirits of their ancestors return" and will contribute to the "healing of the nation."
