“Interest in crime stories is associated with fear”: an interview with Roman Mayakin

The premiere of the second season of the crime-comedy series "Two" from showrunner Evgeny Kulik took place in the KION online cinema. The star of the project, Roman Mayakin, spoke in an interview about his attitude to sitcoms, crime on the screen, as well as the problem of infogypsyism. - In the series "Two" you play the role of Mamon - a crime boss. What attracted you to this image? Was there anything that you personally added to the character?

- You know, this is one of those works that are created together with the artists. It happens that you come to the project, they already roughly outline the plan for you, how, what, how they want to see your hero. Your task is minimal - to embody it in the frame. When we first met the guys and I auditioned for the role, I immediately offered my vision of this hero. The kids love my ideas. Then together we began to develop the character, to finish writing a voluminous story around him. Some scenes changed, new lines appeared. We can say that this is a kind of co-creation of all those who participated in the project - mine, directors, Zhenya Kulik. In the end, we filmed and got high, it was in a good sense of the word not burdening the process, full of humor and lightness.

What do you think about the crime-comedy sitcom format with short ten-minute episodes in general?

- It seems to me that now is the time for high-quality "popcorn", if I may say so. In "Two" there is no claim to a great movie, this is the format that you turn on on your phone or tablet when you are going somewhere or waiting for someone. This is not an event for which you calmly sit at home, turn on the TV and watch.

“Two” is just good, high-quality “popcorn”, which is professionally made and funny. In my opinion, the humor here is of a different quality than one could find in the series a few years ago. Moreover, it should be noted that the guys - Zhenya Kulik, Lesha Krivenya - left KVN, their experience is not related to acting. But still, "Two" is done great from an acting point of view.

If we talk about my character, then in the first season, he seems to be declared. In the second, a plot is tied around the events associated with the hero, and I get more screen time.

— Don't you have the feeling that stories about crime both on television and on streaming are already in abundance?

- Listen, when was this excess not? There's an entire channel that only shows crime dramas and action movies - and it feels great doing it. Such projects will always find their audience. I think that this interest is connected, first of all, with some fears. We are afraid that we will meet some inadequate people - all this is about anxiety and a sense of fear. When you see how other people experience this fear, you get a certain pleasure from it. Therefore, stories about crime are common - we have a lot of fear in our lives. It has nothing to do with TV or streaming, it has to do with human psychology. Whether this is good or bad is not for me to judge.

After all, the viewer often tries to compare himself with the hero he sees on the screen. It is clear that most people want to earn more or find a suitcase of money on the street. This is a very common wish. And in "Two" they show in a humorous way what can happen when you actually find such a suitcase. However, the story does not slide into pure absurdity. This is essentially a folk comedy, albeit with criminal elements. From the series "sat down, laughed, relaxed and moved on."

Do you watch movies and series like a regular viewer? Which of the last do you remember the most?

- I watch movies all the time. I have almost every platform that exists today on my phone, so I always include something new. First of all, it is interesting to me from a professional point of view. But I can’t look at my own work at all like an ordinary viewer - every time I notice something, so I don’t like much. And even if I like some elements, I still leave remarks while watching: “Here it was necessary like this.”

Returning to the cinema, I recently reviewed Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas cartoon. It's just incredible how cool it all is. Cinema is a very big part of my life, which interests me in general.

- In one of the interviews, you mentioned that your son does not gravitate toward acting. Do you think it is important for young people today to have a profession that is in demand, or is it still worth listening to their own aspirations?

“Of course, the answer is obvious. If today some activity is extremely relevant, then in 5-10 years this may no longer be the case. Become a professional in your field and treat it like a craft - that's what's important. It's also important to make sure you do what you love.Choosing a profession just because it brings money is a choice based on fear, which we have already talked about. This is the same banal logic - "if you can earn money with this, then I will not die of hunger." But you can justify your choice with love, not fear. Maybe now your favorite profession will not bring you millions, but you will do what you love every day, and this is a rarity these days. Although, ultimately, it seems to me that if you do what you love most, it cannot but bring you money.

- Recently, you also played the main role in the series "Sergius against evil spirits." Were you satisfied with this project?

- In general, I'm satisfied. Although I always have a difficult attitude towards all the works in which I took part. I am very picky about myself, I constantly notice everything behind me. Also, I always have some ideal idea of how it could be, it always seems to me that you can do even better: change the music somewhere, something else somewhere. But that's my personal opinion. Again, all this is a matter of taste - it is difficult to make a project that absolutely everyone will like. In any case, "Sergius against evil spirits" is a cool fantasy comic with elements of black humor. And in general, I think this work was a success. Then I begin to complain about myself.

- Continuing the theme of this project - have you encountered paranormal phenomena in real life?

“I have never seen flying saucers in my life. However, there were, for example, unusual coincidences, in such situations you usually say: “Lord, I knew it.” In my opinion, this is due to the fact that certain thoughts are spinning in our heads related to our fears. Gradually, it starts to happen in reality, and it seems to us: “Oh, this is my intuition.”

Of course, I believe in some fatal things - like the fact that if a child should be born at 25, then he will be born. How you approach this event is your personal area of responsibility. You need to pay more attention to what's going on in your head. Of course, I think that there is definitely some other form of life in our universe. But I had no contact with her.

- What do you prefer - work in the theater or cinema?

You have to understand that these are completely different things. Cinema is about a technological approach. There you need to stand play precisely, while the light, sound, camera and everything else is installed around in a certain order and angle. This, of course, is a creative profession, but it is more technical, and therefore the approach to it is different.

The theater is, first of all, a live spectator, you go on stage, you have no right to make a mistake, to repeat the double. There is, you know, a bicycle and skates - they seem to be different things, but both are about sports. Both cinema and theater are talking about art, but they are still very different. I love both.

- You said earlier that in the past you weighed 130 kg, but you were able to seriously lose weight. Tell me how?

- First of all, there are no miraculous drugs, pills and medicines for this, I will not advise anything like that. First of all, weight loss is due to proper nutrition and physical activity. More exercise and less food is my advice. Plus, you need to drink plenty of water.

Everyone knows how to lose weight. It is more important to understand what caused the failure in the body, why you are getting better. To do this, you need to go to the doctor, make a kind of diagnosis - check the level of hormones, find out if the organs are functioning correctly. If everything is OK, then I recommend just eating less and moving more. Then everything will be fine.

- At the age of 17, you were actually left alone due to the tragic death of relatives. Do you have any advice for teenagers on how to find the strength in themselves to achieve their goals, despite life's difficulties?

- Everyone in life has a barrel of honey and a fly in the ointment. As my master Alla Borisovna Pokrovskaya once told me, “a thunderstorm does not strike a bush.” Someone's parents die, and this is an incredible grief for a person. Someone's pet dies, and this is also a great grief. You need to understand that it does not happen that it is you who are worse than someone else. In life, everything can change, because every day you wake up a new person.

If today it seems that there is impenetrable darkness around, then tomorrow everything can be very cool. But everything happens in life, there's nothing you can do about it. Your main function is to live this life happily so that the universe rejoices for you. She created you, you use the time given to you to the fullest. As a rule, all the difficulties that occur in our lives strengthen and temper us.

- Recently, the topic of "infogypsy" has been increasingly discussed - especially after the resonant interview of Ksenia Sobchak with Elena Blinovskaya. How do you feel about the activities of such coaches?- Girls earn money, and thank God. They don't do anything wrong. Both Sobchak and Blinovskaya are the same eggs, only in profile. These are people who collected information in the public domain, accumulated it in their own format and began to tell others. The question is: why is it so good in our country? Some elementary things are explained to you, and the reaction is as if this is a sensational discovery. Information that helps make our lives better is available to everyone. You can watch it, read it, listen to it. It just needs to be done. Blinovskaya took up this, so now she sells courses. Millions of people listened to this, and now they began to blame her.

In my opinion, Sobchak behaves rather ugly - she arranged an exposure, after which she began to do the same, sell her own courses. I have never taken a course like this and probably won't. But it really helped someone, and thank God. Speaking in the language of girls, each person has a different level of vibration. Someone needs to be told in Yaroslavl, someone in St. Petersburg. That's what they do, but I'm generally not very interested in it. I don't think it needs that much attention.
