Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan dies

Screaming Trees vocalist Mark Lanegan has died at the age of 57, according to his Twitter account.

The causes of death were not specified.

Screaming Trees was one of the pioneers of the grunge genre and - along with Alice In Chains, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and other groups - popularized the genre in the early 1990s. Known for his friendship with Kurt Cobain, whose wife, Courtney Love, later helped the musician recover from drug addiction. Rolling Stone magazine talks about it.

After the breakup of Screaming Trees in 2000, Lanegan briefly worked with The Queens of the Stone Age, as well as releasing solo projects and collaborating with various musicians. He published collections of poems and memoirs.

In 2020, he contracted the coronavirus and spent several weeks in the intensive care unit. Lanegan mentioned his experience in the book Devil in a Coma.

Colleagues and fans express their condolences to the Lanegan family. Screaming Trees drummer Mark Pickerel, Joy Division and New Order bassist Peter Hook, Welsh musician and former member of The Velvet Underground John Cale published their words of grief.
