Prime Minister of Moldova said that the republic may introduce a state of emergency due to lack of gas

Moldovan Prime Minister Natalia Gavrilitsa said that the government is considering the possibility of introducing a state of emergency in the country due to the threat of cutting off gas supplies. It is reported by RIA Novosti.

“This will be necessary so that the government can quickly make decisions and respond to the situation,” the prime minister explained.

According to her, the authorities are considering various options for action and everything will depend on whether Moldovagaz can pay off its debts to Gazprom on time.

Prior to this, Deputy Prime Minister of Moldova Andrey Spinu advocated a new contract with Gazprom. The politician recalled that the agreement was signed back in 2008, and since then has been repeatedly extended. At the same time, the Deputy Prime Minister stressed that there are no political conditions in the negotiations or in the document itself. He confirmed that Moldovagaz lacked almost half of the funds to pay the advance payment for January in the amount of $65 million, which must be made before January 20.

On January 12, Moldovagaz informed the Moldovan government about financial difficulties and a possible suspension of gas supplies by Gazprom due to non-fulfillment of financial obligations by the Moldovan side. It is specified that the company faced financial difficulties due to the inconsistency of tariffs with the increased price of imported gas in January. In this situation, the authorities of the republic recommended that state institutions reduce gas consumption.
