Peru demanded from the Spanish Repsol to compensate for the damage from the oil spill

The Peruvian Foreign Ministry has demanded that the Spanish company Repsol compensate for damage from an oil spill that occurred off the coast near the country's capital, Lima. This was reported by TASS with reference to a statement posted on the department's Twitter page.

The Foreign Ministry of the Latin American country indicated that the Repsol oil spill in Ventanilla is the most serious environmental disaster in Lima in recent times. It is noted that the ecological disaster endangered the flora and fauna in two protected areas and caused great damage to hundreds of families of fishermen.

“Repsol must immediately compensate for the damage,” the message says.

The spill occurred on January 15 while unloading a tanker in the Ventanilla area, north of Lima.

As a result of the incident, about 6,000 barrels of oil were released into the ocean, and 18,000 square meters of beaches were polluted. The Prosecutor's Office of Peru is conducting an investigation to assess the damage to nature.

In turn, the Spanish company said that the oil spill occurred due to high waves that were caused by the eruption of the underwater volcano Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Haapai in the Kingdom of Tonga. Repsol added that they are cleaning up the aftermath of the spill and cleaning up the beaches.

Earlier it was reported that an abandoned tanker in the Red Sea could leave 8 million people without water.
