Rosprirodnadzor urged not to wait for Norilsk fines

Rosprirodnadzor proposed not to wait any longer for Norilsk Nickel-level fines, since an oil spill of this level is a single event. This was stated in an interview with RBC by the head of the department, Svetlana Radionova.

“Don't expect any more Norilsk fines. This, thank God, is a single event on the territory of our country,” said Radionova.

According to her, then Norilsk Nickel paid 146 billion rubles. penalties for damage to the environment.

In 2021, there were several accidents caused by industrial enterprises, most of which voluntarily compensated for the damage. In March, there was an incident on the Zapsibtransgaz underwater gas pipeline (a subsidiary of Sibur) near Nizhnevartovsk in the Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. Then a wide fraction of light hydrocarbons (NGL) caught fire in the waters of the Ob River. Then Sibur paid a fine of 284 million rubles.

In May, an oil-containing liquid leaked at LUKOIL's Osh field in Komi, which got into the Kolva River. The total damage amounted to just over half a billion rubles.

On May 29, 2021, at CHPP No. 3 of the city of Norilsk, which is part of the structure of Norilsk Nickel, owned by Russian billionaire Vladimir Potanin, a reservoir where diesel fuel was stored was depressurized. More than 20 thousand tons of oil products got into the Ambarnaya River. The area of pollution was about 180 thousand square meters. The Ministry of Emergency Situations recognized the accident as a federal emergency. The maximum allowable concentrations of pollutants in the rivers where diesel fuel got after the accident were exceeded tens of thousands of times.
