EU approves sanctions against five Russian citizens

The heads of the ministries of foreign affairs of the EU member states approved sanctions against five Russians for organizing elections to the State Duma in Crimea. This was announced in his microblog on Twitter by Radio Free Europe journalist Richard Jozvik.

EU foreign ministers on Monday approved an asset freeze and a travel ban on five Russians linked to the organization of the State Duma elections in Crimea last year.

The report clarifies that these measures are not related to the escalation of the situation in Ukraine.

Elections to the State Duma of the VIII convocation were held from 17 to 19 September. Elections of heads of 12 constituent entities of the Russian Federation and 39 regional parliaments were also held. In October, the Ukrainian authorities imposed personal sanctions on 237 people for organizing voting “in Crimea and Donbass.”

Crimea became part of Russia after the coup in Ukraine, which took place in February 2014. In March of the same year, the authorities of Crimea and Sevastopol held a referendum on the issue of reunification with Russia, in which more than 80% of those who had the right to vote participated. The transition under the jurisdiction of the Russian Federation, according to official data, was supported by 96.7% and 95.6% of voters, respectively.
