Losses from the water blockade of Crimea amounted to ₽150 billion

The losses from the water blockade of Crimea by Ukraine on the peninsula were estimated at 150 billion rubles. This was reported to RIA Novosti by the chairman of the committee on legislation of the regional parliament, deputy head of the working group on assessing the consequences of the blockade, Sergei Trofimov.

“In the process of considering a claim against Ukraine due to the water blockade, the amount of damage will only grow. Any legal entities can join the lawsuit during its consideration, since virtually all participants in the economic activity of the republic suffered losses from the water blockade, ”Trofimov noted.

According to him, the most difficult part of the work was done in Crimea in order to substantiate the position on holding Ukraine accountable. The defendant's guilt was also proven.

In August, the investigative committee opened a criminal case under the article on ecocide after the blocking of the North Crimean Canal by Ukraine. The head of the Crimean parliament, Vladimir Konstantinov, said that the names of those involved in the blockade of the peninsula have been established.

Before the annexation of Crimea to Russia in 2014, the peninsula's water supply was largely dependent on the mainland of Ukraine: water came from the Dnieper through the North Crimean Canal. In 2017, the Ukrainian authorities built a dam in the Kherson region, after which fresh water stopped flowing to the peninsula. In Crimea and Moscow, such actions were compared with genocide. In Kiev, they stated that they would resume water supply only after the actual return of the peninsula to Ukraine.
