Moldova - Sowing campaign in Gagauzia is in jeopardy due to fuel prices

Moldova (bbabo.net), - Sowing of the second group of grains in Gagauzia may be on the verge of failure. The risks of leaving the fields uncultivated grow in proportion to the rise in prices for diesel fuel. Some farms are ready to buy diesel at current prices, however, according to farmers, it is not yet sold in large volumes at local gas stations. In Moldova, the price of diesel fuel has reached historical records - almost 27 lei per liter, reports gagauzinfo.md

But even for that kind of money they don't want to sell fuel to farmers at gas stations in Comrat. The fuel crisis in the midst of sowing work took the agricultural enterprises of Gagauzia by surprise.

“A month ago I paid and there is no fuel, you understand? Today they say it already costs 26 lei. I called gas stations, I call everyone, they say that they have diesel fuel, but they are waiting for the price. They are waiting, they want an even higher price, although there are full tanks and they do not give it. It is a very difficult situation,” said Konstantin Fuchedzhi, head of one of the agricultural enterprises in the autonomy.

Alarming signals to the Main Department of the Agro-Industrial Complex of Gagauzia are also received from other agricultural producers, said the head of the department Andrei Dimitroglo.

“Signals are coming, and a lot. We also discussed this topic at the Ministry of Agriculture, and we communicate with our leaders almost every day. Yesterday I spoke with a deputy of the People's Assembly, chairman of the commission on agriculture. A worrying situation, of course. And it is difficult to solve it, because fuel becomes more expensive every day,” he said.

According to the climatic calendar of our regions, the sowing of the second group of grains should begin no later than the end of March. If the fuel crisis is not resolved by this time, many farmers in Gagauzia risk missing out on the opportunity to harvest the 2022 harvest.

“Very difficult situation, nothing to work with. We have already begun leveling the soil, preparations for the spring field work have already ended, and we are standing. We need to sow 600 hectares of the second group of crops. The first - 500 hectares have already been sown. These are wheat, barley, peas. And now we need to prepare for the second group, row crops - sunflower, peas, corn, ”says agrarian Konstantin Fuchedzhi.

About 20 percent of agricultural enterprises in the region are at risk of facing such a situation. Basically, these are small, collective and peasant farms.

“Some saw this situation and tried to stock up on fuel. But there are smaller farms, which still work more today and their situation is worse. We see that the fuel is sold in limited quantities and they will have to buy at a higher price. All this will affect the cost of production. It will be expensive,” Andrey Dimitroglo, head of the agro-industrial complex of Gagauzia, said.

To date, 1,100 agricultural enterprises have been registered on the territory of Gagauzia. About 60,000 hectares of land have been allotted for sowing the second group of grains this year in Gagauzia.
