Ukrainian cameraman received an award in Germany for the film about the Battle of Ilovajsk

Ukrainian cameraman Ivan Ljubish-Kirdey received the award "Deutscher Kamerapreis" in the category of “crisis report” for his work on the documentary “The murderous war in Ukraine – escape from Ilovajsk”. Both Ukrainian and foreign journalists had worked on it.
The film was shot by Ukrainian journalists Georgiy Tyhyj, Ivan Ljubish-Kirdey and photographer Maxim Levin during their stay near Ilovajsk at the end of August last year.

On August 29, 2014 Georgiy Tyhyj, Ivan Ljubish-Kirdey with colleagues from other media (Maxim Levin from Lb.ua and Markian Lyseiko of Ukrinform) could barely escape from the encirclement under Ilovajsk (Donetsk region).

The Battle of Ilovaisk started on 7 August 2014, when the Armed Forces of Ukraine and pro-Ukrainian paramilitaries launched a series of attacks to capture the Ukrainian city of Ilovaisk and defeat pro-Russian insurgents affiliated with the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR). When entered the city on August 18, the government forces soon found themselves encircled by the insurgents. After days of encirclement, the government troops entered in an agreement with the insurgents, favored and backed by Russian president Vladimir Putin, concerning the retreat from the city. However, this agreement has been not honored causing deaths of many Ukrainian soldiers while they were trying to escape.
