RANEPA reports double-digit food inflation in 2022

In 2022, food prices in Russia will rise by 10% due to problems with a shortage of fertilizers in the country. This was reported by RANEPA experts, writes Komsomolskaya Pravda.

Analysts interviewed by the publication note that the shortage of fertilizers affects the yield of cereals, the prices of which have already increased in 2021. And the rise in grain prices raises the cost of other commodities, such as meat and dairy products.

“In order to prevent price increases and shortages, temporary restrictions on the export of fertilizers have been introduced. In fact, the government has secured the existing proportions between the domestic and foreign markets, ”said Andrei Tenishev, Head of the Competition Law Department of the RANEPA.

Anatoly Tikhonov, director of the Center for International Agribusiness and Food Security of the Graduate School of Corporate Governance, RANEPA, believes that inflation will remain at 10% in 2022.

According to him, there is a very low supply of fertilizers in Russia. Agricultural producers at current prices lack about a million tons. This is all reflected in prices for consumers. Therefore, expectations for 2022 are much tighter, and food inflation will remain in the double digits.

The peak of the growth in food prices in Russia fell in 2021, while it is necessary to continue to contain them further. This was announced on December 27 by the chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko at a press conference following the autumn session of the upper house of parliament.
