According to the National Bank of Moldova, at the end of the third quarter, the number of payment cards issued in the Republic of Moldova in circulation amounted to 2.31 million. In accordance with the technical decision, contactless cards accounted for 99.9% of the number of new cards issued during the reporting quarter , and 90.5% of the total share of cards in circulation.

Of the total number of cards in circulation belonging to individuals, 53.7% belong to women. The most numerous active cards are social cards - 79%.

During the analyzed period, there was a constant increase in the share of cards issued on general terms out of the total number of cards in circulation. This indicates a voluntary predisposition of users to cash payment instruments, regardless of the need to receive certain salary or social benefits.

In the third quarter of this year, a total of 7.2 million withdrawals were made with cards issued in the Republic of Moldova, amounting to 17.7 billion lei, while the number of non-cash payments amounted to 26.2 million transactions. worth 8.3 billion lei.

During 2020, transactions carried out abroad with payment cards issued in the Republic of Moldova decreased significantly, which was greatly influenced by traffic restrictions imposed by the pandemic situation. In 2021, the trend of operations recovered, increasing in the third quarter by 61.4% in terms of quantity and 56.5% in terms of value.

The total amount of fraud using payment cards issued in the Republic of Moldova amounted to 3.2 million lei in the reporting quarter.
