Turkey replaces chicken in the diet of Russians

Russia (bbabo.net), - Over the past ten years, turkey production in Russia has quadrupled. People are tired of chicken, pork seems greasy, beef is expensive, and lamb is scarce. Experts are sure that the consumption of turkey in the country in the coming years may double again against the backdrop of a healthy lifestyle trend.

In 2021, the production of turkey meat in Russia increased by 22.67% and amounted to over 400,000 tons of finished products in slaughter weight, the AGRIFOOD Strategies consulting agency reported. Thus, according to preliminary data, Russia overtakes Poland and, quite possibly, the main leader, Germany, in terms of production volumes in Europe, and lags behind only the United States in the world.

In 2021, the Russian livestock industry experienced a shock from rising costs and several periods of exacerbation of the epizootic situation, the Center for Economic Forecasting of Gazprombank notes. As a result, the increase in meat output turned out to be a record low since 2005 - 51,000 tons. And the decline in broiler production was a record since 1996. The main contribution to the increase in meat production in the country was made by the turkey.

For the third year in a row, the total volume of the Russian poultry meat market has remained stable solely due to the growth in turkey farming, confirms AGRIFOOD Strategies. So, in 2021, the production of broiler meat decreased, according to various estimates, by 1.2-1.7%. From a total production of 4.5 million tons of chicken, this is a significant decrease. And the increase in turkey production fully compensated for this decline. And the share of turkey in the total volume of poultry meat production in Russia has reached 8%. In 2021, per capita consumption of turkey meat in Russia was 2.6 kg.

According to the research company GfK, as of the middle of last year, in the structure of the meat basket of Russians, chicken occupies 34%, pork - 21%, beef - 7%, turkey - 3%. But turkey is the only meat that shows an increase in demand compared to the same period in 2020. Meat consumption decreased by 4% per kg due to the increase in the average price. But the demand for turkey in the middle of last year increased by 14% in physical terms, while for chicken it fell by 10%, pork - by 4.1%, beef - by 2.9%.

A turkey has been 1.5 times more expensive than a chicken for eight years now. But over the year, turkey breast has risen in price by only 8%, and chicken carcass - by 15%

Turkey is more expensive than chicken about one and a half times. But over the year, the price of the most popular and expensive product from turkey - breast fillet - rose by only 8%, which is below the official inflation rate in Russia at 8.4% and well below the record price increase for chicken, fixed at 15% in the calculation. per whole carcass, according to AGRIFOOD Strategies. At the same time, a significant part of the buyers are elderly people who believe that the turkey (as a more dietary and healthy meat) helps them to maintain their health, emphasizes Albert Davleev, president of AGRIFOOD Strategies. "The turkey is reclaiming its rightful place in the Russian market, which it never had because there was no product," he explains.

According to him, in all developed countries, the turkey occupies 10% of the meat market. Taking into account the fact that our entire meat market is 11.5-12 million tons, theoretically, domestic consumption of turkey in the country should grow to more than 1 million tons. This is hardly possible in the near future. But 600-700 thousand tons is quite a realistic forecast. The demand for turkey in our country is still ahead of production, Davleev believes.
