Germany backs Russia on non-expansion of NATO

Steffen Cotre, a member of the German Foreign Policy Committee, said that Russia has the right to demand from NATO not to accept Ukraine into the alliance. He told RIA Novosti about this.

“Russia, so to speak, after the end of the Cold War, was taken in pincers, the expansion of NATO to the east took place contrary to the agreements, NATO approached the Russian borders, the United States opened bases everywhere. Russia rightly has a sickening feeling, Russia has the right to insist that Ukraine now does not fall into NATO,” he said.

Earlier, Deputy Foreign Minister of Russia Alexander Grushko said that Russia would defend its security by military means, if political means fail. He told reporters about this following a meeting of the RF-NATO Council.

Grushko said that the meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was absolutely necessary, it was a shake-up.

The meeting of the Russia-NATO Council was held on January 12 at the headquarters of the alliance in Brussels and lasted about four hours. This is the first meeting of the council in 2.5 years, initiated by the Russian side, and organized as a follow-up to the talks on security guarantees between Russia and the United States, held January 9-10 in Geneva.
