In Bulgaria, opponents of sanitary measures almost seized parliament

The center of Sofia was blocked the day before by a mass rally against the sanitary measures introduced in the country. Barely a month after the creation of the new Bulgarian government, protesters called for the resignation of the cabinet.

The action was organized by the Vozrozhdeniye party represented in the parliament. The demonstrators were joined by representatives of local associations of the restaurant business, which has been significantly affected by anti-epidemiological restrictions. The main requirement of those who took to the streets is the abolition of the so-called "green certificates" required to visit restaurants, shopping centers, hotels and any public events, as well as to carry out professional activities in the service sector.

The rally in the capital of the Balkan republic resulted in clashes with the police. As a result of the riots, nine law enforcement officers were taken to the hospital. Media workers were also attacked, who, according to the protesters, deliberately covered the procession from angles that did not reflect its real scale.

The protesters repeatedly, but unsuccessfully, tried to storm the parliament. Even deputies from the Vozrozhdenie party tried to support them in this from inside the building. However, they did not manage to break through the ranks of representatives of the national security service and remove the makeshift barricades of chairs and tables blocking the central entrance.

Bulgarian Prime Minister Kiril Petkov said he respects the right of citizens to protest, but does not accept the idea of abolishing "green certificates" against the backdrop of the approaching fifth wave of coronavirus.
