Number of people killed in riots announced in Kazakhstan

During the riots in Kazakhstan, 225 people were killed, including 19 security officials, Serik Shalabaev, head of the criminal prosecution service of the Prosecutor General's Office, said.

"225 dead were delivered to the morgues, including 19 policemen and military personnel," Shalabaev was quoted as saying by RIA Novosti. He also informed that a total of 4,578 people were injured during the riots. Of these, 4353 were wounded, including 3393 law enforcement officers.

Earlier, President of Kazakhstan Kassym Zhomart Tokayev instructed during a meeting with law enforcement agencies to establish the exact number of civilian casualties during the riots.

The President also gave a number of specific instructions. Particular attention was paid to the issues of a comprehensive investigation of the tragic events in Kazakhstan, the development of a new regulatory framework for the actions of law enforcement agencies in critical situations.
