Against drones and hidden targets. The Russian army receives new anti-aircraft guns

The Russian Army will use the 2S38 Derivation-PVO self-propelled anti-aircraft gun to destroy drones. figured out what the new anti-aircraft gun is capable of. And what is its difference from the Soviet anti-aircraft self-propelled gun "Shilka", which it replaces. “Perhaps the most unusual of the new Russian systems is the 2S38 Derivation-Air Defense. It is designed for air defense of front-line mechanized army units and airborne troops, including to counter drones. It is expected that these complexes will replace the venerable Shilka. The process has already begun,” writes the portal 19FortyFive.

The self-propelled gun uses a wide range of shells - from armor-piercing to extended range. At the moment, it is known that Russian engineers are developing a special “intelligent ammunition” for Derivation-Air Defense, which will allow hitting small targets. Details have not yet been disclosed.

Commander-in-Chief of the Ground Forces of the Russian Federation Oleg Salyukov in October last year said in an interview with the Ministry of Defense Krasnaya Zvezda that Derivation-Air Defense would be put into service in the near future. Now, according to a number of media reports, the installations are already entering the troops.

The Derivation-Air Defense project provides for the use of an armored tracked chassis of the BMP-3 infantry fighting vehicle and a special combat module. This self-propelled anti-aircraft artillery system has a set of target detection systems. At the same time, Derivation-Air Defense can, with a high probability, hit aircraft, helicopters, drones and cruise missiles of a potential enemy. The system can also fire at ground targets.

The Derivation-Air Defense is equipped with passive-type detection and tracking equipment. In this capacity, an optical-electronic detection and aiming system developed by the Minsk design enterprise of the optical-electronic industry OJSC "Peleng" is used.

“The Derivation-PVO installation is replacing the Shilka self-propelled installation, the production of which was started in the USSR back in 1964. "Derivation-Air Defense" has a long range of cannon armament to repel attacks from aircraft and helicopters. "Derivation-PVO" is armed with the latest 57-mm cannon. Thus, reliable destruction of almost any air targets is ensured, ”said Konstantin Sivkov, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Missile and Artillery Sciences.

The 57-mm automatic gun "Derivation-Air Defense" should work in conjunction with the fire control system. Ammunition will consist of 148 shells with automatic feed to the gun.

“This is an ideological replacement for Shilka. "Shilka" has been for many decades, much more interesting in the last 20-30 years, it was as a means of covering tanks not from air threats, but from threats from the upper floors of buildings during hostilities in the city. Naturally, it can shoot down some air targets, but the effectiveness will be much lower than that of Derivation-Air Defense. In principle, Derivation-Air Defense, like Shilka, can be used not only for air targets, ”said Dmitry Stefanovich, researcher at the Center for International Security at IMEMO RAS.

According to the expert, the main advantage of Derivation - Air Defense is that it can use projectiles with controlled detonation, which will allow it to effectively hit a variety of classes of air targets.

In addition, the installation will be able to destroy hidden targets on the ground. So, the agency "RIA Novosti" said that "Derivations - Air Defense" will hit the enemy, who took refuge in a trench from a direct shot. The anti-aircraft artillery complex control system will calculate the direction of the projectile flight, its ballistics and the point of explosion by setting a timer for each projectile.

The detonation time is entered into each projectile using a programmer mounted on the Derivation-Air Defense barrel next to the muzzle brake. Thus, the shells will explode in the air exactly above the enemy's trench or in another place, covering his infantry with shrapnel. In addition, the areas of possible maneuver of drones will also be covered with shrapnel.

Stefanovich emphasized that Derivation-Air Defense will never act on its own - it is part of the layered multi-level air defense system of the ground forces, in which "more complex weapons will be used for more complex targets."
