Spain's Princess Cristina appears in court for fraud trial

Princess Cristina has appeared in court to face fraud charges, marking the first time a member of Spain's royal family has been put on trial, reports the .

The younger sister of King Felipe stepped out of a car parked just yards from the courtroom entrance with her husband, Iñaki Urdangarin, who is facing charges that include embezzlement, falsifying documents and tax fraud.

She is accused of being an accomplice in the alleged embezzlement scam, which involves her husband and 16 other defendants. They all deny the charges.

The 50-year-old could face up to eight years in jail if found guilty of the charges, which will be weighed up by a panel of three judges.
