Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in an interview with The Washington Post, said that even Ukrainians who are well disposed towards Russia will defend the country.

“Now we have a lot of Russian-speaking Ukrainians who support Ukraine – even those who had a positive attitude towards Russia after the occupation of Crimea and Donbass. I know that everyone is going to defend our country. In addition to the army, absolutely every Ukrainian will fight to protect their land,” the head of state said.

According to him, Ukraine is in favor of a diplomatic solution to differences, since there will be no winners in the war between Russia and Ukraine.

“If we are going to defend ourselves against one of the most powerful armies in the world, then it will be war. And if this is a war, then it will be a big war, and everyone will lose. Hundreds of thousands of lives will be lost. Ukraine will suffer; Russia will suffer; European countries neighboring Ukraine will suffer; and those who are further away will be affected by the migration crisis. For us, the most important thing is to preserve our territory,” Zelensky explained.

He summed up his thought by calling for a dialogue with Russia. As the president noted, he turned to the United States for help in finding a format for negotiations.

Earlier, Zelensky said that Russia would be able to cope with the new sanctions imposed against it, and called for them to be introduced "already now."
