Putin discussed the situation in Ukraine with Finnish President Niinistö

Russian President Vladimir Putin held telephone conversations with his Finnish counterpart Sauli Niinistö, during which they discussed the security of Europe. This was reported by the press service of the Finnish head.

“President Niinistö expressed his deep concern about the situation and stressed the need to maintain peace in Europe. The discussion highlighted the need to find solutions through continuous dialogue. During the discussion, President Niinistö noted that Finland is in full control of its security policy, ”the press service said.

In addition, the parties discussed the situation in Ukraine, as well as the 30th anniversary of the agreement between Finland and Russia on the foundations of relations.

In his New Year's address, Finnish President Sauli Niinistö said that Russia's demands for security guarantees from the US and NATO run counter to European security orders. According to him, despite the fact that Moscow has made demands to the US and NATO, Europe cannot stand aside, especially when the sovereignty of several European countries, including Sweden and Finland, has been called into question by politicians outside the EU.

According to him, the only tools to move forward are patience, responsibility and dialogue. Niinistö stressed that a strong future cannot be built by threatening the use of military force or other forms of violence.

On December 15, the Russian Foreign Ministry handed over to the American side drafts of a treaty between Russia and the United States on security guarantees and an agreement on measures to ensure the security of the Russian Federation and NATO member states. The document, in particular, says that the United States should not create military bases in the territories of the former USSR countries that are not members of NATO. The US should also not use their infrastructure for any military activity and develop bilateral military cooperation with them. NATO countries, according to the document, must refuse to conduct any military activity on the territory of Ukraine, as well as other states of Eastern Europe, Transcaucasia and Central Asia.
