Sri Lanka's Opposition Leader accuses United National Party of sabotaging 19th Amendment

Opposition Leader of Sri Lanka, MP Nimal Siripala de Silva has slammed the United National Party accusing the party of intentionally sabotaging the passage of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution in parliament and laying the blame on the opposition for the delay in implementing the proposed constitutional reforms.

De Silva told a news conference that the draft bill presented to parliament had not contained the amendments suggested by the Supreme Court and that the English translation was not provided to the MPs until 11.15 am on Tuesday.

He said the opposition will not support the 19th Amendment until the government redrafts the bill, gazettes it and obtains the Supreme Court approval.
