A coolant leak occurred at the Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant

In Japan, at the emergency Fukushima-1 nuclear power plant, a cooling solution leaked, which is used to maintain the so-called "ice wall" at the emergency facility. This barrier is designed to prevent the ingress of groundwater under the power units of the station.

According to preliminary calculations, about four tons of liquid leaked from the territory of the nuclear power plant, the NHK television and radio company reports.

Currently, TEPCO, which is the operator of Fukushima-1, is making efforts to eliminate the problems that have arisen. Experts suggest that the leakage of the solution occurred due to damage to the pipe through which the liquid circulates.

In mid-January, TEPCO employees at Fukushima-1 recorded a drop in the level of coolant in two of the four tanks intended for its storage. The refrigerant, which is an aqueous solution of calcium chloride, is stored there at a temperature of minus 30 degrees Celsius.

No environmental damage has been caused to date as a result of the solution leak.
