Moldova - Karp: I don't think there will be a war, our only weapon

Moldova (bbabo.net), - Opposition MPs and MPs in power all express skepticism about the outbreak of a classic war in the region due to the tense situation between Russia and NATO. While MPs are almost convinced that the power of dialogue and diplomacy will prevail over military power, security experts say that the likelihood that a war will break out just near the Republic of Moldova is quite high, notes ipn.md

The deputies in power say that the likelihood of a war breaking out is low, and that we are currently witnessing a contest of power between the greats of the world who want the upper hand to be theirs.

“I don't think there will be a war, the only weapon the Republic of Moldova has is the way of democracy. From a geopolitical point of view, there is a confrontation between two great forces for the division of spheres of influence. On the one hand, this is the United States, which is fighting for the right to choose each sovereign state to enter or not into any military bloc, on the other hand, we see the Russian Federation, which is trying to maintain its so-called zone of influence, which it had back in the Soviet period ”, - said the MP from the PAS Lilian Karp on the air of the program “Bună Seara” (“Good evening”) on the Public Television.

On the other hand, representatives of the parliamentary opposition believe that the Republic of Moldova should not take the side of any international political actor in the context of the current crisis, and appeal to the great forces so that they respect its status of neutrality and non-interference in external conflicts.

“I think that no one wants war, because a bad peace is better than a good war. The diplomacy of the Republic of Moldova could become the mediator that could inform our neighbors that we are a neutral state, and in case someone wants military crises, we should not be involved. Politics now is one that tries to use people's fear to divert attention from the economic problems that everyone in the family has. An attempt is made to find an external enemy. I hope that we will manage not to get involved in the disputes of great powers, because they are able to solve their problems on their own. And we must take care of our citizens,” said BCS deputy Adrian Lebedinsky.

Regional security experts say that while they would like to be pacifists, the current geopolitical context shows that disagreements between the two superpowers could escalate into military conflict at any moment.

“As long as there are armed forces, as long as there is an interest of some states in expanding their territory, including armed forces, and other states in protecting and returning their lost territories, the inevitability of war remains quite high. As for the Republic of Moldova, we are neither the subject nor the object of this conflict, but we are involved in these geopolitical events because the Republic of Moldova cannot but demand the restoration of its right to territorial integrity and, therefore, the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of the country remains priority”, said security expert Viorel Cibotaru.

Recently, representatives of the extra-parliamentary opposition called on the Chisinau authorities to summon Russian Ambassador Oleg Vasnetsov to the Foreign Ministry for explanations about military exercises in the Transnistrian region. The request was made on the basis that there are many suggestions that Ukraine could be attacked from the Transnistrian region. A few days ago, the Task Force of Russian troops from the Transnistrian region launched military exercises on the left bank of the Dniester. According to the Russian press, these exercises tested the degree of “combat readiness”.
