Macron spoke with Putin on the deployment of nuclear weapons in Belarus

French President Emmanuel Macron expressed concern about the statements of the head of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko about nuclear weapons in the republic. He said this during a press conference following talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Interfax reports.

According to the French leader, he told his Russian colleague that he was concerned about the draft Constitution of Belarus, which proposes to remove two fundamental provisions from 1994, as well as Lukashenka's call for nuclear weapons.

“President Putin reassured me in this regard,” Macron said.

The meeting of the leaders of France and Russia was held on February 7 in the Kremlin. Putin called it "meaningful" and "useful."

Earlier, Lukashenko said that he would offer Putin to return nuclear weapons to Belarus if similar NATO systems were deployed in Poland.

Prior to this, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said that the alliance could deploy nuclear weapons in Eastern Europe if Germany refuses to provide its territory for this.
