Sending US troops to Europe may not be the last amid a likely escalation, writes Politico. According to the publication, thousands of American soldiers "remain on alert" in the US and the EU in case "Russia continues to build up forces."
About 8,500 U.S.-based troops are on alert for rapid deployment in the event of an escalation, Politico notes. True, the Pentagon assures that the alliance is not going to fight for Ukraine, the movement of forces is only a signal of NATO's readiness to protect its allies.
The strengthening of the alliance's military contingent in Europe is taking place against the backdrop of growing tensions in relations between Russia and the West, which accuses Moscow of preparing an "invasion" of Ukraine. At the same time, the Kremlin has repeatedly rejected the existence of any plans to attack the neighboring republic.
Earlier it was reported that the United States will soon send additional military forces to Romania, Poland and Germany.
