Zakharova compared the hysteria around the Russian attack on Ukraine with Powell's test tube

The hysteria in the American and British media around the "Russian attack on Ukraine" is very reminiscent of the situation in the early 2000s around Iraq. This was stated during the briefing by the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, RIA Novosti reports.

“They write about the hypothetical possibility of a Russian attack, some plans - nonsense, nonsense. Most of all they shout that Russia should attack Ukraine, Washington, London. They talk about it every day and, accordingly, their media,” she said.

Zakharova stressed that even Ukraine, represented by its president, foreign minister and secretary of the Security Council, has made more than one statement asking the West to stop escalating this situation.

The representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry added that this is not the first time the Western press has made absurd statements, recalling how in the early 2000s the Western media convinced that Saddam Hussein had weapons of mass destruction in Iraq.

“Every day, dozens of reports were published, hysteria was whipped up on television. What turned out? It turned out that initially it was the US plans to attack Iraq, they needed a pretext. And the information environment served all this in the form of propaganda. And today the whole world knows that the States lied, that Colin Powell brought to the Security Council not evidence, but some kind of fake. That all this was a planned operation, ”concluded Zakharova.

In recent months, statements have been made in the West and Ukraine in particular about Russia's allegedly impending "invasion" of Ukraine. In turn, the Kremlin more than once directly denied any plans to attack Ukraine, on the contrary, pointing to the possible preparation of a military operation in the Donbass by Kiev.

Earlier, Zakharova said that Moscow is convinced that in order to stabilize the situation in Ukraine, it is necessary that the West stop supplying weapons to Kiev and withdraw its instructors from the territory of the country.
