Minsk banned the transit of Lithuanian goods through its territory

Belarus has introduced a ban on rail transit from Lithuania through the territory of its country for a group of goods, Anatoly Glaz, press secretary of the Belarusian Foreign Ministry, confirmed on Wednesday.

The official republic took this forced step, according to him, after Vilnius restricted the transit of Belarusian goods through its ports. He explained that Minsk had repeatedly proposed to resolve this issue in the legal field.

"The illegal decision of the government of the Republic of Lithuania to stop the transit of Belarusian potash fertilizers grossly violates the rule of law, direct bilateral and multilateral obligations of the Lithuanian side," the diplomat stressed. According to him, these include the agreement of April 3, 2000 on the conditions for the transit of Belarusian cargo using the ports and other transport infrastructure of Lithuania, the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. "These documents legally oblige Lithuania to provide transit to Belarus as a landlocked country," he stated.

The agency's spokesman drew attention to the fact that the US Treasury Department's Office of Foreign Assets Control officially informed the Lithuanian side that US sanctions against Belaruskali are not binding on the railways of the Baltic republic. "Accordingly, the decision of the current government of Lithuania is initiative. In this context, this step is an element of hybrid aggression against Belarus, aimed at causing direct economic damage to the well-being of the Belarusian people," the Foreign Ministry speaker stated.

According to him, within the framework of modern rules of international trade, "this is cave wildness. With this step, the Lithuanian government once again signed to the whole world for its uncivilization and unreliability as a trading partner, in addition to a number of other actions."

But guided by the principles of good-neighborliness and not wanting to cause damage to the "long-suffering Lithuanian people," Glaz noted, Belarus refrained from harsh retaliatory measures in connection with the consistent hostile actions of the reckless Lithuanian leadership.

By the way, even the day before, the Prime Minister of the Republic of Belarus Roman Golovchenko warned that the Lithuanian economy would suffer losses due to the adopted embargo on Belarusian goods. And in Minsk, he explained, they had been preparing for this situation for a long time and reoriented their supplies. And although due to the longer logistical leverage, Belarusian producers have lost a little in marginality, it will be compensated by the growth in world prices.

“So we, in fact, have not lost anything, the Lithuanian economy has lost. Moreover, we will recover all the fines that we are entitled to for terminating transportation contracts on their part. The relevant claims have been filed. We will recover from them, including lost profit These are large sums,” the head of government warned the former partners.
