In the US, one of the groundhogs predicting the coming of spring has died

A groundhog named Mel from Milltown, New Jersey, died shortly before Groundhog Day, according to Fox5 New York.

Mel was one of the American groundhogs that are pulled out of their burrows on February 2 every year to predict spring. If the groundhog calmly leaves the hole, then spring will be early. And if the animal is afraid of its shadow, then the winter will last another six weeks.

The people of Milltown offer their condolences on Mel's death. The local administration has already promised to find a new groundhog, because "in Milltown they should know what all the Mel cousins say about the timing of the onset of spring."

The most famous groundhog in the United States is Phil from Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. Also famous were the deceased Mel, Dave from Dunkirk, New York, Chuck from Marion, Ohio and others. There are also predictive marmots in Canada, such as Wee Willie from Wyarton.

A study was conducted that the accuracy of marmot predictions was 40 percent.

Meanwhile, in the zoos of Moscow and St. Petersburg, on February 2, marmots did not come out of hibernation. And meteorologists predict early spring in central Russia this year.
