Russia - Digital triage system will speed up care in hospitals in Moscow

Russia (bbabo.net), - To improve the provision of emergency medical care in Moscow hospitals, the introduction of a digital triage system for incoming patients has begun. In 2022, the new tool will be available in all multidisciplinary hospitals in the capital. It helps doctors in hospital emergency departments quickly assess the condition of patients for further diagnosis and treatment. This was announced by Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Social Development Anastasia Rakova.

"Medical triage in manual mode is already being carried out in every admissions department of multidisciplinary hospitals. The new digital assistant will standardize and systematize this process, bring the organization of the admissions department in line with modern international quality standards. The system is based on automated clinical algorithms that will help doctors quickly determine the severity of the patient's condition, identify hidden threats and risks, and prioritize care.At the same time, all decisions are made by the doctor, and the new tool only helps to identify patients who require increased attention. The digital triage system is currently being tested in several hospitals in Moscow. In 2022, we plan to introduce it in all city multidisciplinary hospitals for adults, and then in children's hospitals," Rakova said.

When a patient enters the admission department of the hospital, the nurse during the initial examination will be able to enter into the system data on body temperature, blood pressure, respiratory rate, heart rate and saturation, patient complaints, as well as an anamnesis of life and the course of the disease. Depending on the reason for the appeal and the characteristics of the course of the disease, the volume of these questions may be different.

"These data will be immediately available in the electronic medical history of the inpatient. Based on the information, the digital system will generate a conclusion, a preliminary diagnosis, complex prescriptions, and determine the need for priority medical care. The entire process will take up to five minutes, and, if necessary, will be carried out in parallel with the provision of medical care," the vice-mayor added.

In the digital system, four levels of medical care priority are identified using color prompts: red, orange, yellow and green. The red and orange levels are the most critically ill patients who are routed directly to the intensive care unit or emergency operating room. Patients with emergencies that require observation are referred to the intensive care wards, where they are immediately examined by a specialized specialist, additional examinations and constant monitoring of the condition are carried out. Patients in a stable condition are routed to the diagnostic rooms of the admission department.

The implementation and use of a digital patient triage system requires minimal training. The program has a clear interface and is integrated into a single digital healthcare platform. All information about the patient's condition, which is entered into the program at the time of the initial examination and questioning, immediately becomes available to any doctor in the hospital.

The introduction of such solutions became possible thanks to a single digital healthcare platform. It was developed by the Capital Complex of Social Development and the Department of Information Technology.
