Military Thought: the United States can start a large-scale conflict in Ukraine with NATO forces

So far, the United States benefits from a “low-speed” military conflict in the Donbass, but if a coalition of NATO members ready to fight Russia is formed, they can move on to a large-scale conflict in the region. The journal "Military Thought" writes about this.

The material notes that due to the growth of the combat capabilities of Russian troops, NATO and "satellite states" that are not members of the alliance are trying to unleash low-intensity military conflicts in different regions of the world.

“For this, measures are being taken to expand the “gray zone”, primarily along the perimeter of Russia. In this zone, in fact, hybrid conflicts are being waged under the slogan “no war, no peace” (for example, in Ukraine with a systematic increase in its military power by NATO countries) in anticipation of an opportune moment when it is possible to move on to escalation,” the authors of the article write.

The article argues that the United States is pursuing a consistent course of confrontation with Russia in the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Central Asia in order to weaken the economic and military potential of Moscow.

“In Ukraine, it is still beneficial for the United States to maintain a sluggish military conflict in the Donbass, since in this case they are consistently strengthening their positions along the perimeter of the southwestern borders of Russia, and in the event of a large-scale military conflict, they may lose control of the puppet leadership of Ukraine and, accordingly, this territory,” the authors believe.

However, they write, when a coalition of NATO members who are ready to fight with Russia is formed, a large-scale military conflict in the region “without direct participation in the hostilities of US military formations” will become expedient for Washington.

The story of a possible “Russian invasion” of Ukraine has been actively promoted in the West since mid-autumn last year. The U.S. has consistently pointed to a supposed increase in Russian forces near the Ukrainian border, threatening Moscow with new sanctions if it escalates. At the same time, the Kremlin has more than once directly denied any plans to attack Ukraine, on the contrary, pointing to the possible preparation of a military operation in the Donbass by Kiev.
