Iraq plans to buy a new batch of Russian T-90s

The Iraqi Armed Forces are considering purchasing Russian T-90 tanks. This was reported by the American portal Defense News with reference to the head of the consulting company NAMEA Group, former adviser to the Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Defense of Iraq Norman Ricklefs.

Ricklefs noted that "the Iraqi Ministry of Defense plans to purchase an additional batch of Russian T-90 tanks" and that "negotiations are already underway." He did not name the number of tanks that Iraq plans to buy.

The Defense News portal recalled that Iraq had already purchased 73 T-90 tanks from Russia in 2016. The Ministry of Defense of the country stated that these tanks, in particular, entered service with the 35th brigade of the 9th division of the Iraqi army. Prior to that, it was equipped with American Abrams tanks, but after the delivery of the T-90, they were transferred to the 34th brigade.

Defense News also reported that Iraq is in talks to buy French Rafale fighter jets and CAESAR self-propelled artillery systems.
