Amendments to the Italian constitution

The Italian parliament approved amendments to the country's basic law. It is reported by il Fatto Quotidiano.

The Constitution will now include provisions on the need to protect the environment, as well as on restricting the exercise of the right to private activity if it is harmful to human health and the environment.

International environmental organizations, among which Greenpeace and WWF supported the changes.

The Italian constitution was adopted in 1947 after the transition to a republican form of government. Since then, it has been amended sixteen times. Italy is the fifth country in the world to have provisions for the protection of nature included in its basic law.

Earlier, in a referendum in Serbia, a majority of those who voted approved the proposed amendments to the country's Constitution, securing the independence of the judiciary.
