Break the Ukrainian impasse. What did Putin and Macron talk about?

Vladimir Putin and Emmanuel Macron held phone talks on Saturday. The Kremlin and the Elysee Palace indicated that the presidents of Russia and France discussed ways to resolve the situation around Ukraine. The leaders also touched upon the issues of security guarantees. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday, February 12, spoke by phone with French leader Emmanuel Macron. As the Kremlin press service informed, the conversation took place on the initiative of Paris.

“In continuation of the discussions during the recent visit of the President of France to Moscow, an in-depth exchange of views took place on issues related to ensuring long-term legal guarantees for the security of the Russian Federation and overcoming the impasse in resolving the intra-Ukrainian conflict, including taking into account the conversations of Emmanuel Macron with the leadership of Ukraine, the United States and a number of European states,” according to a press release issued by the administration of the Russian president.

The report said that Putin again drew attention to the lack of a meaningful response from the United States and NATO to well-known Russian initiatives.

“The unwillingness of the leading Western countries to push the Kiev authorities to the implementation of the Minsk agreements was also emphasized, which was once again manifested in the unsuccessful round of consultations held on February 10 in Berlin by political advisers to the leaders of the Normandy Format states.

Putin and Macron also discussed the situation related to provocative speculation about the allegedly planned Russian “invasion” of Ukraine, accompanied by a large-scale pumping of this country with modern weapons and the prerequisites for possible aggressive actions of the Ukrainian security forces in the Donbas.

It was agreed to continue to keep the above issues in the field of view of the Russian-French dialogue at the highest level. In addition, the topic of preserving and fully implementing the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear program was touched upon.

In turn, the Elysee Palace said that the conversation between the two leaders lasted one hour and 40 minutes and became the fourth telephone conversation in their communication in recent weeks.

Macron discussed the situation around Ukraine with Putin, the conversation was devoted to the prospects for reducing tensions in this crisis.

Recall that on February 7, the President of France paid an official visit to Moscow, and the next day he arrived in Kiev. Macron held talks with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine.

Recently, in Western countries, as well as in Kiev, there have been statements about a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine. Press Secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov called such information empty and unfounded escalation of tension. He stressed that Russia does not pose a threat to anyone. At the same time, Peskov did not rule out the possibility of provocations to justify such statements and warned that attempts to use force to resolve the crisis in southeastern Ukraine would have the most serious consequences.
