MGIMO Associate Professor Nikitina Linked the Resignation of the President of Turkmenistan to the Protests in Kazakhstan

Political scientist, Associate Professor of the Department of World Political Processes at MGIMO Yulia Nikitina, in an interview with, admitted that the departure from the post of President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov could be indirectly related to the January unrest in Kazakhstan.

“The decision of the head of Turkmenistan may be indirectly related to the unrest in Kazakhstan in January 2022. But not so much there are fears of a repetition of these events in Turkmenistan, but it can be about how Berdimuhamedov's rule and himself will remain in the memory of the people. We see that Nazarbayev quickly became a pensioner from the father of the nation. Most likely, it is important for Berdimuhamedov to be remembered as a man who has reached the age of a prophet and who has wisely decided to give way to the young,” Nikitina said.

According to the expert, there is a transition of power in Turkmenistan. Berdymukhammedov has recently been almost openly grooming his only son, Serdar, the current deputy prime minister, for the presidency.

“It is clear that we are also talking about controlled transit, so we can hardly expect serious political changes in Turkmenistan,” Nikitina said.

Earlier, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov announced the need to give way to the young on the way to governing Turkmenistan "at a new stage" of its development. He said that after 15 years of rule, he would give up the presidency, leaving behind only the post of chairman of the Khalk Maslakhaty (upper house of parliament).

At the same time, the president noted that a person brought up in a spiritual environment and in accordance with the high requirements of modernity should become the new head of state. His decision was supported by the honorary elders of the country.

Early presidential elections in Turkmenistan will be held on March 12.
