EU may hold unscheduled talks on Ukraine

EU leaders may hold unscheduled talks this week to discuss the situation around Ukraine. This is reported by the Financial Times, citing sources.

The sources said that European Council President Charles Michel may consider holding such a meeting on the sidelines of the EU-Africa summit on 17-18 February. However, according to them, the final decision will be made after the meeting between German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Russian President Vladimir Putin, which will take place on February 15 in Moscow.

Against the backdrop of media reports and statements by some politicians about an allegedly impending Russian invasion of Ukraine, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed the nation and announced the approval of the Day of Unity. It should take place on the day when, as claimed, Moscow will begin the attack - February 16th.

He stressed that Kiev is striving for peace and wants to resolve "all issues exclusively through negotiations", does not "encroach on someone else's", but will not "give up its own". According to him, both Donbass and Crimea will return to Ukraine - and "exclusively through diplomatic means."

The story of a possible “Russian invasion” of Ukraine has been actively promoted in the West since mid-autumn last year. The US has consistently pointed to a supposed increase in Russia's presence near Ukraine's borders, threatening Moscow with new sanctions if it escalates. At the same time, the Kremlin has more than once directly denied any plans to attack Ukraine, on the contrary, pointing to the possible preparation of a military operation in the Donbass by Kiev.
