Colleague of Scholz urged to recognize the legitimate interests of Russia

The head of the faction of the Social Democratic Party of Germany, Rolf Mützenich, "expressed understanding of the legitimate interests of Russia in the field of security," the newspaper Franfurter Allgemeine Zeitung reports. The politician's statement was broadcast on the ARD TV channel on the day of the trip of German Chancellor Olaf Scholz to Ukraine and on the eve of his upcoming visit to Moscow.

"We need to publicly acknowledge that Russia also has legitimate security interests," Mutzenich said.

He accused the United States of "big mistakes" after the collapse of the USSR, and also called other "omissions" and "wrong decisions" of the American administration. Among them are the invasion of Iraq, "distortions in Europe" and the withdrawal from arms control agreements.

"All these are things that also worry Russia," concluded Scholz's fellow party member. In his opinion, Europe has every chance to return to dialogue with the Russian Federation and restore confidence-building measures on the continent.
