CNN: Russia's invasion of Ukraine will hurt the US as well

A possible Russian invasion of Ukraine would trigger one of the most serious and dangerous national security crises since the Cold War and hurt Americans. This is written by reporter Stephen Collinson in an article for CNN.

According to the journalist, such actions by Moscow will provoke a “shock wave” around the world and, although this is not the main goal of Russian leader Vladimir Putin, will cause significant damage to the prestige of US President Joe Biden.

Collinson recalled that the United States would not send troops to Ukraine to protect it, because it is not part of NATO. He also notes that a direct conflict between Russian and American soldiers is "unlikely."

“A Russian invasion of Ukraine would destroy democratic principles and the idea that the people can choose their own leaders — principles on which the United States has built its foreign policy for decades. This could prompt China to take action against the democratic island of Taiwan, which it considers Chinese territory, in a conflict that is much more likely to drag the US into a major war than an invasion of Ukraine.

In addition, in the short term, he believes, the Russian invasion could have serious consequences for the domestic politics of the United States, including large economic losses.

“Russia has the ability to undermine US goals and diplomacy around the world, including on vital issues such as the nuclear challenges posed by Iran and North Korea, which could potentially pose a direct threat to the American state soon,” Collinson said, commenting on the calls some American politicians to repeat in Ukraine the actions of Washington, which helped drive Moscow out of Afghanistan in the 1980s and allegedly hastened the collapse of the Soviet Union.

In recent months, statements have been made in the West, and in Kiev in particular, that Russia is allegedly preparing an “invasion” of Ukraine. In turn, the Kremlin has more than once directly denied any plans for an attack, and reports from Western media and officials about the preparation of an attack are called unfounded and untrue.

Former Deputy Chief of the Main Operational Directorate of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, Lieutenant-General Valery Zaparenko, in an interview with noted that the likelihood of a war with Ukraine is "very unlikely."
