Russia (bbabo.net), - St. Petersburg scientists have found a safe way to distinguish healthy tissue from damaged tissue during surgical procedures. It is suggested that the data necessary for doctors be obtained using photography in the green spectrum, according to St. Petersburg State University, whose researchers were included in the scientific group.

The problem of separating healthy tissues from patients during operations is very acute for surgeons, because not always the affected areas can be seen with the naked eye.

Now in surgery for such purposes, as a rule, the method of fluorescent imaging is used. It is quite expensive, and its use requires high-tech equipment, which, of course, is available in large modern medical institutions, but small hospitals cannot use this technology. The essence of the method is that a contrast dye is injected intravenously into the patient, which spreads through the organs and allows you to understand by the glow where healthy tissues are and where are the affected ones. But in addition to the price, such a system has one more serious disadvantage, for example, during operations on the liver, surgeons cannot always get a reliable picture.

With the technology of photoplethysmography, which was proposed by St. Petersburg scientists, there is no need to introduce any contrast. The main tool here is a camera that captures blood flow in the green spectrum. A digital electrocardiograph is connected to the camera. The images are processed using special software, as a result, surgeons receive information about where the affected area is and where it is healthy. The technology has already been tested on 14 patients of one of the St. Petersburg hospitals. The method showed high accuracy and ease of use.

The results of scientific development are published in the journal Scientific Reports.
