Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu arrived in Syria, where he inspected the exercises of the Russian Navy in the eastern Mediterranean Sea. It is reported by RIA Novosti with reference to the RF Ministry of Defense.

It is specified that the exercises are conducted in operationally important areas of the World Ocean, as well as in the waters of the seas adjacent to Russian territory.

Shoigu also heard a report by the Commander-in-Chief of the Navy, Admiral Nikolai Evmenov, on the implementation of joint combat training exercises by Russian ships and aircraft of the Russian Aerospace Forces.

During the exercises, ship groups of a mock enemy were hit and firing was carried out at sea and air targets using artillery and anti-submarine weapons.

The Russian military is also working out measures to detect foreign submarines, establish control over navigation in the Mediterranean Sea and the flight of aircraft over it.

Earlier it was reported that Russia transferred to Syria two Tu-22M3 bombers with supersonic anti-ship missiles (ASMs) and MiG-31K fighters with the Kinzhal aviation complex.
