Michigan police investigate arson and shooting at mosque

In the US state of Michigan, police are investigating a tragic incident at a mosque in Dearborn.

Wayne County Police said that on the night of Saturday to Sunday, patrol officers noticed a fire at the al-Huda mosque and rushed to the place. At the mosque, the police clashed with 37-year-old local resident Ahmed Taqi, who, at the sight of the officers, took out a firearm and opened fire.

The police shot Taki before he could hurt anyone. Later it turned out that he set fire to the mosque immediately before the shooting, according to bbabo.net, citing the Detroit Free Press.

Dearborn Mayor Abdullah Hammoud said that Ahmed Taqi had indeed set the mosque on fire and then tried to shoot the policemen. The motives of Taka's actions are still unclear, but, according to the investigation, the man suffered from mental disorders.

Muslim human rights organization CAIR condemned the arson of the mosque and thanked the police for prompt action to neutralize the perpetrator.

“We commend the Dearborn police for their prompt response to an incident that could have had a much worse impact,” CAIR said in a statement.
