Russia - Putin Names Brazil Russia's Leading Trading Partner in Latin America

Russia (bbabo.net), - On Wednesday, February 16, Vladimir Putin held talks in the Kremlin with Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, who arrived in Moscow at the invitation of the Russian leader. This first visit to Russia since he was elected President of Brazil in 2018.

The meeting of the leaders lasted two hours and, as a result, a joint statement was adopted, in which they called for cooperation in almost all areas: in the economy, culture, defense, space, energy and agriculture.

At the beginning of the talks, Vladimir Putin noted that relations between the two countries, interrupted due to the coronavirus pandemic, were being restored. "According to your instructions, leading ministers of your government visited Moscow, and today a meeting of the ministers of defense and foreign affairs is taking place in the 'two' format," Putin said before the meeting.

Bolsonaro, in turn, said that the countries have good prospects for cooperation in the defense industry, oil and gas sectors, as well as in agriculture. "I am sure that my visit to Moscow is a signal to the whole world that our bilateral relations have good prospects for growth," the President of Brazil also stressed.

After the talks, Putin and Bolsonaro went out to the journalists together. The Russian president called Brazil Russia's leading trading partner in Latin America and the Caribbean. "It accounts for a third of Russian trade with this region. Last year, despite the difficulties caused by the coronavirus pandemic, mutual trade even grew by 87 percent," Putin said. The Russian President also noted the successful cooperation between the two countries in industry and space.

Russia is also ready to participate in the construction of new power units of nuclear power plants in Brazil, including small and floating ones. Rosatom exports fuel for Brazilian nuclear power plants and radioisotopes for medical purposes. At the same time, our corporation is ready to participate in the construction of new power units in Brazil, including low-capacity nuclear power plants in land-based and floating versions, where it has accumulated unique experience and has technologies that have no analogues in the world,” the President of the Russian Federation said. Bolsonaro noted that Brazil is interested in building "small nuclear reactors." In general, the President of Brazil stressed that the meeting was rich and useful. "We talked for almost two hours. The agenda is quite fruitful, reflecting a wide range of interests of our countries," he said. According to the Brazilian leader, this indicates that "the two major powers have a huge potential for progress and interaction for the benefit of our peoples."

On many issues on the global and regional agenda, the positions of the Russian Federation and Brazil are close or coincide, Putin noted. Moscow and Brasilia support multipolarity, which is based on international law.

"Our countries stand formation of a multipolar world order based on international law with the central, coordinating role of the United Nations," he said. In addition, the countries are firmly committed to the principles of multilateralism, political and diplomatic settlement of conflicts.

Following the talks, Putin and Bolsonaro adopted a joint statement. "The heads of state stressed their determination to strengthen strategic partnership, deepen political dialogue, raise the level of bilateral relations based on respect for sovereignty, international law and the principles of the rule of law shared by both countries," the document says. The presidents also expressed concern about the growing instability in the world.
