Trudeau accuses Canadian opposition of financial support from abroad

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused truckers protesting of receiving foreign funding. He announced this at a debate in the country's parliament, justifying the need to apply the law on the introduction of an "emergency situation".

Speaking about the need to immediately end the blockade of the border, the Prime Minister pointed out that the protesters are supported from abroad.

“These illegal traffic blocks are being actively fueled by people from the United States and elsewhere in the world. At least half of the funding for the protesters comes from the United States,” Trudeau said.

At the same time, responding to the demands of the conservatives to provide evidence of foreign connections of truckers, the head of government avoided the question, only saying that immediate intervention is now required and that fundamental rights will be respected despite the state of emergency.

In addition to the ruling Liberal Party, the prime minister's initiative was supported by the centre-left New Democratic Party. Opposition leader Candice Bergen said lockdowns should end, but conservatives will not support the emergency measures, which they say stem from the government's unwillingness to listen to the voices of various sections of the population. The Canadian Bloc party was also critical of the Prime Minister's position, pointing out that the introduction of emergency measures could adversely affect the rights of the French-speaking population of the country.

Mass protests by truck drivers continue in Canada. They are dissatisfied with the anti-COVID restrictions introduced on January 15, and are now in favor of their abolition. Under the rules, unvaccinated people entering Canada, regardless of citizenship, must undergo a two-week quarantine before they can move freely. Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said the Canadian government will implement a never-before-used "state of emergency" law.
