Comrades in misfortune. Palestinians raise record amount for Syrian refugees

Residents of the occupied Gaza Strip have raised more than $10 million in less than a month to help Syrians living in refugee camps near Idlib build full-fledged homes. “Originally we were going to build 100 heaters. But they received an unexpectedly large response from the population. They brought us a variety of things and money,” says the initiator of the project, Ibrahim Khalil.

For six years now, Palestinians have been donating food and other important things to Syrian comrades in misfortune through the Merciful Souls Foundation.

But this year, according to its director, Raid Badr, the amount of donations has been unprecedented. He is convinced that the reason for this was a video circulated on social networks showing Syrian children suffering from snow and frost.

“I hope one day we will have a home because our tent was destroyed by the rain,” Nada, an 11-year-old orphan who lives with her grandmother, said in the video.

Now the activists plan to build 3,000 houses, hospitals and schools, the projects of which are published on the organization's website. According to Khalil, the construction of residential buildings will take from 6 to 8 months. However, this is not enough for the population of tent camps, in which about 70 thousand people live.

"Photos and videos of refugees living in tents over the years have made a big impression on Palestinians, many of whom themselves fled the war that broke out at the creation of Israel in 1948," Ibrahim Khalil was quoted as saying by the Turkish Daily Sabah.
