“Today I noticed that Minister Lavrov sent a response from the Russian side to the proposals that were made on January 26 by the United States. Romania participated in the preparation of this US document. But at the same time, what should have been a gesture of openness to dialogue was accompanied by the announcement of the deputy head of the US Embassy in Moscow persona non grata. So the overall picture is rather alarming,” said Bogdan Aurescu in an interview.

Bogdan Aurescu also said on CNN that he shares the fears of the United States, which announced the possibility of an attack on Ukraine in the coming days.

“I have closely followed the speech of my colleague and friend Tony Blinken in the Security Council. I would say that I fully support the presentation and assessment he made. I think the security situation at the moment seems very worrying. After all, despite the statements of the Russian side that it is ready for dialogue and that it has withdrawn its troops from the eastern border of Ukraine, in reality this has not been confirmed,” commented the Romanian Foreign Minister.

On the other hand, Bogdan Aurescu pointed out that the recognition of the independence of the separatist republics in Ukraine would be a violation of international law.

“I saw that the Russian Duma proposed to the President of Russia to recognize the separatist regions of Ukraine as independent entities. If this happens, it will be a clear violation of international law,” Bogdan Aurescu said.
