German Chancellor urges Western Balkans to accelerate EU accession

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz called for speeding up the process of accession to the EU of the countries of the Western Balkans - Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, North Macedonia and Montenegro. It is reported by TASS.

“It is not enough to announce the prospect of EU enlargement to this region as a strategic goal. We must actively speed up this process,” he said at the Munich Security Conference.

Scholz stressed that only a strong and united Europe can play an important role in a multipolar world.

Earlier, Politico, citing a report by the European Chamber of Auditors (EPA), reported that the EU had wasted €700 million to support the Western Balkans. Problems arose where countries needed to change the legal framework. In particular, the EU tried to help states create an independent judiciary, but the EPA pointed to the lack of political will on the part of the leadership of the region's countries to implement the necessary reforms.
