Moldova (bbabo.net), - The Civic Congress Collective Action Party issued a statement on Saturday stressing the need for a city referendum on the placement of the new US Embassy building on the site of the Republican Stadium in the central, historical part of the capital.
The "Civil Congress" listed several fundamental theses.
“First, the degradation and desolation of the central sports arena of Moldova is a heavy burden on the conscience of all Moldovan authorities from 2001 to 2018. Second, the site of the former stadium, including architectural elements and circumstances of historical memory, cannot be excluded from public ownership and should be used as a modernized and landscaped green area for active recreation. Thirdly, the extremely unpopular initiative in society to transfer this very territory of the historical development of Chisinau to the US Embassy is an irresponsible provocation. Its source is the caricature obsequiousness of the representatives of the Moldovan authorities, who are ready to sacrifice the long history of good relations between the Republic of Moldova and the United States to the fleeting conjuncture.”
The "Civil Congress", "considering the extreme lack of independence of the current government, as well as all of the above," proposed:
"First. Propose to the US government, represented by the current embassy, to reconsider its intentions regarding the acquisition of the territory of the Republican stadium.
“Second. The Municipal Council of the Moldovan capital, based on the current legislation, decide to hold a referendum on the future fate and designation of the territory of the former republican stadium.
"Third. In the event that the Chisinau Municipal Council is unable to reach a majority of votes on this issue, the Civic Congress political party will begin collecting signatures from Chisinau residents for a referendum.
“We believe that in such a sensitive issue, affecting the interests and values of hundreds of thousands of citizens, one should rely not on behind-the-scenes agreements and secret decisions, but solely on the mechanisms of democratic expression of will and direct democracy,” the Civil Congress said in a statement.
Recall that back in 2018, one of the founders of the GK, Mark Tkachuk, proposed to resolve the issue of locating the US Embassy precisely through a city plebiscite on this topic.
