The European Union has condemned the massive shelling of civilian targets in eastern Ukraine. This is a violation not only of the Minsk agreements, but of all international humanitarian norms, said Josep Borrell, head of the EU foreign policy service.

"The EU condemns the use of heavy weapons to shell civilian targets," TASS quoted Borrell as saying.

There was a proposal to hold an extraordinary meeting of the Trilateral Contact Group on Donbass to reduce the current tension. The situation needs to be resolved through diplomacy, the statement stresses.

Earlier it was reported that the deterioration of the situation in eastern Ukraine was to be discussed at a meeting on the morning of February 19, but the meeting did not take place due to the lack of Kiev's desire for a constructive dialogue, writes RIA Novosti.
