US proposes bill to reduce plastic waste

A bill has been introduced in the US that could help reduce the amount of plastic waste generated when shopping online. New Jersey Assemblyman John McKeon said he thought about the bill after receiving a small item in a giant box filled with plastic wrap.

In 2020 alone, unsustainable online shopping methods in the US generated nearly 1.5 billion kilograms of plastic waste.

McKeon's bill would ban large internet companies and large retailers in New Jersey from using boxes that are more than twice the size of the item being shipped. Retailers can be fined between $250 and $500 for each violation.

The bill has been submitted to the State Committee on Environment and Solid Waste for consideration. If adopted, it will be the first of its kind in the United States.
